Daily chores are certainly a bore. You finish dinner, put the dishes in the dishwasher, and then get ready to clean up the kitchen a bit. Suddenly, the dishwasher catches fire. Just a normal night taking care of household messes, right?

This nightmarish scenario could become a reality for the owners of 42,000 recently-recalled dishwashers. Read on to find out if your dishwasher is affected, and what to do if your appliance has been recalled.

Which Dishwasher Has Been Recalled?

The recall applies to 24-inch built-in residential dishwashers made by Cove Appliances. The affected models bear the model numbers DW2450 and DW2450WS. If your Cove Appliances dishwasher has a serial number between 20000100 and 20044445, then you’re affected by this recall. As of the time of this writing, there have been reports of five incidents of flames, smoke, or burning smells emanating from the affected washing appliances.

Currently, there are no reports of any injuries from the flames. None of the affected units seem to have caused any fires that have caught an entire residence on fire, suggesting the issue may have been detected early enough to prevent any further damage.

The dishwashers covered by this recall were sold from February 2018 until May 2021, with a retail price of $2,500.

What Should You Do if You Own a Recalled Dishwasher?

If you own one of these recalled dishwashers, don’t use it at all. Unplug it from any power source so that it is at no risk of causing a fire in your home. Until you get it replaced or repaired, hand-wash your dishes.

The issue can occur in affected dishwashers while they are active, or while they’re simply idle and plugged in. According to Cove Appliances, the issue relates to the heating element in the appliance that is normally used to heat up water for use during operation. An error in the hardware of the appliances can cause the heating element to not properly shut back off after use. The element continues to draw power in affected units, eventually resulting in smoke, burning smells, and even outright flames if left unchecked.

Thankfully, owners of the recalled appliances will be able to schedule free repair services through Cove Appliances. Call them at their toll-free line, 888-651-9376, between 8:30 and 5:00 Central Time, Monday through Friday. Once you tell them your model and serial numbers, they’ll schedule a free repair to get your dishwasher running properly.
