Daily Harvest has announced a series of recalls of some leek and lentil products after 470 people reported illness or gastrointestinal damage. The company shipped roughly 28,000 units of the recalled products throughout the US according to a notice filed with the Food and Drug Administration.
The products were sold through the company’s online store as well as through its permanent location in Chicago and a pop-up store in Los Angeles. They were on sale from April 28 to June 17, and the FDA reports that some consumers were given samples of the now-recalled products.
The products included leek and lentil crumbles, many of which were sent to vegan influencers on social media. If you have any of the affected products, called “Daily Harvest French Lentil + Leek Crumbles” in your freezer, you’re encouraged to discard them immediately before anyone consumes them.
Daily Harvest says it plans to reach out to consumers who purchased the recalled products in order to notify them of the danger posed by the food. “We’ve received customer reports of French Lentil + Leek Crumbles causing gastrointestinal issues,” the company wrote in an official statement. “We simultaneously launched an investigation with internal and external experts throughout our supply chain and in accordance with regulatory procedures.”
Many users on social media expressed frustration with Daily Harvest for the way it announced the recall. The company posted an image of the recalled product on its Instagram page and included the caption “An important message regarding our French Lentil + Leek Crumbles. Link in bio with details.” Users commented that this was a dangerously oblique way to announce a serious health hazard.
“Social media managers and PR people of the world- if your company’s product is causing severe and life-threatening illness, posting an aesthetically pleasing photo advertising a product with a vague ‘link in bio’ is definitely not the vibe,” wrote one user on Twitter.
Daily Harvest is a premium food subscription service founded in 2015 that ships ready-made meals to subscribers through its online program. The service only delivers to select zip codes in the United States. It’s backed by numerous celebrity investors like Gwyneth Paltrow.
The company has come under scrutiny as a result of this recall, with many social media users noting that the food is very expensive and is marketed as being a healthy vegan alternative to other food box services. Daily Harvest has not made any further comment regarding the recall.
